It’s been claimed that the awarding of homecare packages across Galway has reached critical levels – with just two packages being granted each month.
Galway-Roscommon TD Michael Fitzmaurice says that it is becoming increasingly difficult for eligible people to receive the vital packages.
He says frustration is growing amongst Public Health Nurses who see more and more people turned down with each passing week.
The Glinsk-based Deputy says the situation means that many people cannot be discharged from hospitals and are forced to remain in badly needed beds.
In a statement, the HSE says they have been providing home care support in excess of available funding in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon – and expenditure must be brought back in line with allocated budgets.
It also says that there is no set number of packages allocated on a weekly or monthly basis and there are currently almost 100 people on the waiting list for homecare packages.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says that homecare packages are essential to freeing up hospital spaces.
