It’s the end of an era for another landmark property in Salthill, with the Warwick Hotel set to be demolished to make way for a new development, expected to be a state-of-the-art nursing home.

The new owners of the derelict hotel, restaurant and nightclub building – which gradually closed its doors during 2009 and 2010 – have applied to Galway City Council for permission to demolish the building “in preparation for redevelopment”.

They have not yet indicated what the development will entail, but it is expected to be a nursing home.

It comes just weeks after the demolition of the Sacre Coeur Hotel, which suffered extensive fire damage earlier in the Summer.

Rushmany Nursing Home Ltd – which is headed up by Sharon Conlon from Barna and Paul Conlon from Moycullen – lodged the application at City Hall this week to demolish the Warwick.

The Conlons completed the purchase of the 33-bed Warwick at the end of 2015 for a figure believed to be in the region of €700,000.

The company already operates the 25-bed Rushmore Nursing Home on Knocknacarra Road in the city, which is currently undergoing significant extension works to comply with new guidelines for nursing homes.

The Warwick Hotel first opened its doors in December 1933 after the former Greenmount Hotel was purchased from Mrs Martin by Dubliner John (Jack) Keogh.
