The road at Prospect Hill in the city centre has reopened following the blaze which gutted Shannon Dry Cleaners overnight.
A structural engineer has assessed the scene amid concerns over an old rail tunnel which runs underneath the building and across the road.
The tunnel running below the Shannon Dry Cleaners site had operated as part of the old Galway to Clifden railway line.
That tunnel was the focus of safety investigations by a structural engineer from Galway County Council amid fears for both the site and the adjacent road.
Following these inspections, the local authority is satisfied that there is no risk and the road has since re-opened.
Smoke is still drifting from the site this afternoon as a hollow shell, twisted metal and a handful of charred appliances are all that remain of Shannon Dry Cleaners.
Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, however, it’s understood that it will be some time before it’s safe for investigators to enter the site.
Local residents are amazed at the speed at which the fire took hold of the iconic building – with one fire crew member stating that the fire engulfed the building quicker than any other blaze he had tackled in his 30 years of service.
Homes and businesses in the area and at Forster Court behind the drycleaners, were temporarily evacuated as the blaze took hold.
It’s understood there was slight damage to Bohermore Post Office which was closed for a time this morning, but has since re-opened.
