OPW urged to open Salmon Weir gates to prevent flooding

The OPW is being urged to immediately open the sluice gates at Salmon Weir bridge in the city to prevent winter flooding across the county.
The River Corrib flows out of Lough Corrib to the sea, but concerns have been raised about already high levels in the lake, which is fed by several rivers across the region.
The matter was discussed this afternoon at a meeting of the Athenry/Oranmore municipal district.
Councillor Malachy Noone says the sluice gates on the Corrib in the city were opened in November last year – but it was too late as the water level in Lough Corrib was already too high.
He says all 16 gates at Salmon Weir bridge need to be opened immediately to allow the levels to drop, preventing flooding in the Corrib/Clare River catchment area.
The motion was passed unanimously by members of the district, and will be sent to the OPW by the County Council executive.
Councillor Noone says opening the gates earlier this year would save a lot of hardship for people in flood prone areas.
