Galway City Council could be forced to return to court in the coming weeks to seek an order to move an illegal Traveller encampment that has returned to Doughiska.
Councillor Michael Crowe says that since January the local authority has accrued legal fees of almost quarter of a million euro in following the camp across the city.
The illegal encampment has been moving to various locations over the past nine months – including Galway Airport at Carnmore, Knocknacarra and Ballyloughane beach.
Councillor Crowe says that the returned camp in Doughiska, which previously left the area in May, is showing blatant disregard for residents and seriously disrupting local activities.
He says the security and legal costs associated with following the camp are a serious drain on resources that could be far more effectively spent elsewhere.
Councillor Crowe says the situation has gone on long enough and it’s time for definitive action.
