Verge trimming not a priority for county roads

Verge trimming on regional and local roads across the county is not a priority due to budget constraints.
That’s the message from Director of Services Liam Gavin who answered calls for action on verge trimming at this week’s meeting of Tuam Municipal District.
He reminded councillors that four million euro was available for county roads in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
However, this has now been reduced to two million euro – a funding level similar to that recorded in the nineties.
Fianna Fail councillor Mary Hoade proposed that a request is sent to the department for adequate funding for the maintenance of roads in the Tuam area.
Liam Gavin said road surfacing and drainage will be prioritised over hedge trimming unless additional funding is secured.
