University Hospital Galway is facing an unprecedented crisis that will only worsen as the winter months approach.
That’s according to the Irish Midwives and Nurses Organisation, which says the hospital is currently experiencing some of the worst overcrowding on record.
It comes as UHG remains at ‘Code Black’ this morning – the highest level of the Full Capacity Protocol introduced to deal with overcrowding.
The INMO says that some patients in the overburdened emergency department are currently waiting on trolleys for up to 50 hours.
It says the situation means that medical protocols are falling by the wayside – with two patients flagged as needing immediate attention waiting nine hours to be been.
Industrial Relations Officer with the INMO Ann Burke says the situation is completely unsustainable and will only get worse.
