A Garda investigation has been launched following the discovery of a significant quantity of hazardous medical waste dumped on the Cappagh Road.
Councillor Cathal O’ Conchuir says the waste consists of up to two dozen bags filled with used medical equipment, samples and bloody clothing.
He says items among the material also include documents with branding from local health agencies and records identifying medical professionals.
The Sinn Fein Councillor was contacted by a member of the public who discovered the bags dumped at three different locations last evening.
He says the illegally dumped material was deemed too dangerous to remove and a specialist disposal crew has been brought in to remove the waste.
Councillor O’ Conchuir says the City Council is investigating and those responsible will be prosecuted.
