The Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway is under severe pressure today, and the Saolta Hospital Group has implemented Full Capacity Protocol.
Significant numbers of patients are currently awaiting admission to the hospital – with 35 on trolleys.
Management says efforts are continuing to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge.
A number of non-urgent elective procedures have also been cancelled.
The public is being advised to attend the emergency department only in the case of real emergencies.
Patients are advised to contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance.
