Christmas Market organisers pledge to keep off Eyre Square grass

A Christmas Market seems likely to go ahead again this year in the Eyre Square area – but this time around without a blade of grass being touched.

An application has been received by Galway City Council from the organisers of previous years – in the revised proposals, all of the stalls and attractions will be on the pavement and hard surface areas of the Square.

With the grass area taken out of the equation, the size of the market will have to be reduced, but according to the organiser – Maria Moynihan Lee – it will still be a ‘wonderful Christmas experience’.

“We have an application before the City Council and one which won’t involve a blade of grass being touched. We believe it will be an experience that will again make it the best in the country,” she told the Galway City Tribune.

Subject to City Council approval over the coming weeks, the market will run from Friday, November 18 to Thursday, December 22, and will not be as big as previous years due to the ‘no grass’ restriction.

“We believe with the support of the City Council that this year’s market will be a very exciting Christmas experience – the best in the country – and one that will add greatly to the seasonal atmosphere in the city centre area,” she said.

Following last year’s Christmas market – a large segment of which was located in the green area – there was considerable damage caused to the grass in Kennedy Park with reseeding and re-sodding work having to be carried out earlier this year.
