New car sales in Galway have experienced a strong rise over the past 12 months and now stand 15 percent higher than this time last year.
However, despite the increase, the figure for Galway has fallen considerably behind the national average.
There have been 5,730 new cars sold across the county so far this year – that’s a significant jump on the 4,988 cars sold by the third quarter of 2015.
However, despite the notable increase, the 15 percent increase for new car sales in Galway trails the national average of 18 percent.
Car sales across the county account for 4 percent of the national figure of 143,000, also slightly down on the figure of 4.12 percent for 2015.
Nationally, Roscommon saw the biggest surge in car sales, with sales increasing by 30 percent so far this year for a national market share of just under 1 percent.
Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that the top selling car for September is the Volkswagen Golf, while the Hyundai Tucson is the best selling car so far this year.
