Galway Mountain Rescue Team rescued a hillwalker who had fallen ill near Clonbur last night (Sunday).
The male hiker in his early 20s, who is a U.S citizen, was one of a group of six students on a day trip to the Maumtrasna Mountains.
The group had reached the plateau and was close to the summit of the mountain at an altitude of around 600 metres when the young man became ill.
Other members of the walking group administered first aid at the scene, including a trainee member of Galway Mountain Rescue Team.
The rescue team had been alerted by Mill Street Gardaí around 3p.m yesterday and arrived at the scene about 6.30 last evening.
The hiker had partially recovered and was able to make it down the mountain with some help from the rescue team, although extra Mountain Rescue staff were on standby with a stretcher became necessary.
The man was evacuated from the mountain just after 9 o’clock last night and was brought back to his accommodation.
15 members of Galway Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the rescue operation and were supported by 4 members of Mayo Mountain Rescue.
