Local businesses in Salthill have thrown their support behind the campaign to launch Salthill as the halfway point on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Salthill, one of the biggest urban areas on the coastal route, has been touted as the perfect stopping point for revellers as they make their way along Ireland’s Atlantic coastline.

The Wild Atlantic Way – a key focus in Fáilte Ireland’s drive to attract tourists to Ireland’s shorelines – has been a huge success with Galway seeing increased tourist numbers year on year since the project was launched in 2014.

According to the owner of the Royal Villa restaurant, Jeff Warde, the project is about local business owners working together to make Salthill the best area it can be for residents, visitors and the local enterprise community.

“I’ve been here for seven years and I suppose you get busy running your own business.

“This is really about making Salthill as good as it can be because there is a risk that it could fall by the wayside,” said Jeff.

Jeff, a member of The Village Salthill Committee, said that both initiatives help to rejuvenate the image of Salthill.

The Village Salthill Committee ensure that green areas are well kept and that strategies are developed for traffic and parking – as well as developing plans for empty and derelict buildings.

“It’s about showcasing everything that we have here,” he said.

The Village Salthill has been launched to drive forward a refreshed image of one of Galway’s most well-known areas.

The committee hope to highlight their belief that Salthill is not only a hugely popular tourist area but also a residential and working community.

“We want to make this a great place to have your own business – a good place to live, a good place to work and a good place to visit,” said Jeff.
