Almost €2 million in funding has been approved to bring derelict homes across the city and county back into use.
Funds of 1.7 million euro have been ringfenced for Galway’s local authorities as part of the national Derelicts and Voids programme.
Galway County Council submitted 81 housing units to the government for funding.
55 of these have been approved, while a further 26 are currently being assessed.
Meanwhile, of the €1.7 million in funding, €300,000 will go to Galway City Council to renovate 22 housing units in the city.
All but one of the derelict city properties submitted have been approved under the programme.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says the plan is just one step in the larger programme to tackle Ireland’s housing crisis.
