ASTI secondary school teachers across the city and county are engaged in strike action today in a row over pay.
A quarter of a million secondary students nationwide will be forced to stay at home as a result of the picket.
Teachers want equal pay for new staff who’re earning less than colleagues hired before 2011.
They are also threatening to strike another six days before Christmas.
The Tánaiste’s warned the government cannot do unaffordable deals with sections of the public sector.
Frances Fitzgerald’s told the Dáil the government has put offers on the table for teachers and Gardaí.
But she’s again insisted that any agreement can only be reached within the terms of the Lansdowne Road agreement.
The Tánaiste says the government is doing everything it can to avert the widespread closure of schools and to try and make sure Gardai don’t go on all out strike.
