Two people were fined for illegally dumping hospital waste by the side of a city road last month.
The culprits were also landed with a hefty bill to cover the cost of the clean-up of potentially hazardous medical waste and paraphernalia along the rural, northern end of the Cappagh Road.
Galway City Council has issued four €150 litter fines to the duo, which amounts to €600.
It has been confirmed that the pair responsible for the illegal dump have to fork out an additional €1,200 to cover the cost of cleaning up the illegal dump.
Specialist equipment and trained personnel had to be hired to safely dispose of the dumped medical waste. The total amount the two had to pay was €1,800.
A spokesperson for the Council said it investigated a complaint of illegal dumping on the Cappagh Road last month and the fines were issued once the culprits were identified.
The staff who trawled through the rubbish, found some evidence which linked the individuals to the dump.
The dumped material included around 20 bags stuffed with some household waste but also medical boxes and tubes, bloodied swabs, used plasters and dressings and samples.
