Works underway to restore Athenry town walls

Works are underway on a major conservation project to restore Athenry’s medieval town walls.
The project being undertaken by the County Council is aiming to conserve the walls, a ruined medieval tower and the original town gate.
The works involve the use of lime mortars and masonry repairs using traditional techniques and will also include ivy clearance and treatment.
Crews are currently working on the North Gate, South West Tower and South Wall.
The town walls were built in the 14th century and are considered the finest example of medieval town-walls remaining in Ireland.
