The death of a 20-year-old driver brought to three the number of tragedies since the weekend that will mar Christmas across Galway city and county – Luan McCaul from Ballyfruit, Headford was killed in a multi-vehicle collision near Headford on Monday last at around 2pm.
His vehicle was in collision with a Land Rover jeep being driven by a woman who had her three month child travelling with her.
The woman, who was airflifted to UHG with serious injuries, is reported to be making a good recovery – almost miraculously the baby escaped with very minor injuries. Four other people struck by the car driven by the dead man were also injured.
Communities across South Galway were united in grief after the death of Mark Fordham (8) in a farm accident last Saturday morning, when the child came into contact with a potato grading machine close to his home. Mark, a second class pupil at Kiltiernan NS, was the only child of Donal Fordham and his wife Patricia from Keamsella, Kilcolgan.
Loughrea too is in mourning after a road accident that claimed the life of a 27-year-old man last weekend. Brian Regan died after being hit by a car on the Athenry Road close to the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa at 5.30am on Sunday morning: he was the son of former Mayor of Loughrea, James Regan and his wife Mary.
The search goes on for an NUIG student who was last seen close to Claddagh Church during the early hours of last Friday. Up to 90 people have joined the search for 20-year-old Michael Bugler from Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare.
