GGalway Hospice is being urged to amend its plan for a new facility at Merlin Park in the city.
At a meeting of the city council last evening, councillors voted to rezone 7 acres of land at Merlin Park to allow for the construction of the new facility.
City planners recommended that the land be left for recreational use but councillors argued that a hospice facility should be a priority.
Conservation Volunteers Galway have expressed their disappointment at the decision to rezone the land.
Spokesperson Peter Butler says the field where Galway Hospice plans to build a new facility has high environmental importance.
Peter Butler of CVG says they’re hoping that Galway Hospice will come up with an alternative layout for the new facility at Merlin Park, when it holds a meeting next Monday.
