GMIT to make statement on funding crisis

GMIT is to make an announcement next week regarding the future management of the institute.
It follows the recent revelation by President Dr. Fergal Barry that a funding crisis facing GMIT is ‘perilously close’ to impacting on education being offered to students.
He recently advised an Oireachtas committee on Education that dwindling state funding, the lack of borrowing opportunities and regional campuses are critical factors in the current financial crisis.
In a statement, GMIT says that it and the Higher Education Authority both recognise the particular challenge of GMIT’s multi-campus provision.
It adds that staff have been informed that arrangements have been made for the ongoing management of the campus and these will be announced on Thursday.
Speaking before an Oireachtas Commitee, GMIT President Dr. Fergal Barry stated that regional campuses play a significant role in the funding crisis – and warned that education being offered by GMIT is perilously close to being impacted by the current crisis.
