More than 560 new jobs were announced by IDA-supported companies across Galway over the past year.

And the authority is confident of continued growth over the coming year through Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the start-up technology cluster.

Site visits and enquiries by potential investors in recent months are on an upward trend.

Ita Lynn, the IDA’s Acting Business Development Manager for the West, said there are currently around 14,000 people employed at IDA-supported companies in Galway.

“We are coming to the end of another very active year with strong growth recorded in Galway city and region.

“The range of activity has been good, too, with a mix of new companies establishing here and growth in established companies,” said Ms Lynn.

She said the number of IDA-supported companies in Galway increased from 63 to 68 in 2015, while eight new investments were announced, creating 565 new jobs.

That figure excludes the 300 jobs to be created in the construction phase at the proposed new Apple data centre in Athenry, which is currently with An Bord Pleanála.

“We are seeing growing interest from high growth emerging companies which are a great fit with Galway’s vibrant start-up technology cluster.

“With visits and enquiries showing an increase from last year, we are optimistic about future growth in FDI in Galway,” Ms Lynn said.
