A gang from the greater Dublin area are thought to have been involved in about 15 house break-ins across different parts of Galway on the last two weekends of January.
A significant amount of jewellery as well as small amounts of loose cash was taken by the gang – possibly made up of three members – who targeted unoccupied houses.
The raids occurred in the Moycullen, Oughterard, Salthill and Loughrea areas with the gang using a silver Audi A4 that was found abandoned in the Kildare area last weekend.
The gang targeted unoccupied houses and are thought to have used heavy bars and hammers to gain entry, mainly through the backdoors.
As well as what was stolen, damage running into tens of thousands of euro, was caused to the houses by the gang members who ransacked their way through the residences.
Galway Garda Crime Prevention Officer, Sgt. Pat Flanagan, said that the gang probably established houses were vacant by knocking on doors and then just looking for directions if the door was answered.
“We feel now that it was a gang from the eastern side of the country that carried out those break-ins. The car we found is being technically examined and we are appealing for anyone with information on these crimes to make contact with us,” said Sgt. Flanagan.
He again advised householders to ensure that all doors were locked and windows secured before leaving their homes and to have any alarm system turned on and in good working order.
“If an individual, couple or family are going away for a weekend, they should always let a trusted neighbour know and advise that person to report any suspicious activity to the Gardai straight away,” said Sgt. Flanagan.
Anyone who may be of assistance to the Gardai in relation to the break-ins is asked to contact Galway Garda Station, Mill Street on 091-538000.
