Nearly 200 local residents have signed a petition against a proposal to build nine new homes in a mature estate in Renmore.
Tony and Mary Shaughnessy have sought permission to build the houses on the three-quarter acre site at Dún na Mara.
The plans involve the construction of 8 two-and-a-half storey four-bed semis and a two-and-a-half storey four-bed detached house, as well as service connections, landscaping and the extension and “reconfiguration of an existing public turning area to form a new enlarged public turning head”.
The site is bounded by existing dwellings on Renmore Road to the north and on Dún na Mara to the south, while vehicular access to the site will be from Dún na Mara.
A total of ten submissions and objections have been lodged by local residents – including one from the Dún na Mara Residents’ Association which has a petition signed by more than 170 people.
The residents argue they will lose a communal green area to the development, which they say has been a community amenity for almost 50 years.
“It has been maintained by locals throughout the years, providing shrubbery, while maintaining both grass cutting and flowerbeds. Removing the boundary wall and redesigning this to enable access to nine new homes removes the single, common green amenity on our street,” the residents said.
Residents also expressed concerns over potential traffic hazard – pointing out the estate was built in the 1960s and did not anticipate the level of cars of 2015, as well as the density of the proposal, safety and the loss of an informal play area.
A decision is expected from planners by the end of the month.
