The Dáil has heard calls for a major clampdown on underage drinking following concerns raised by a Galway East TD.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Anne Rabbitte saidshe’s becoming increasingly concerned by the level of underage drinking she’s witnessing – and the length teens are going to in a bid to consume alcohol, including soaking pieces of oranges in vodka and freezing them.
She says a lack of enforcement is enabling teens to engage in unusual and potentially dangerous activities.
Addressing Justice Minister and Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald in the Dáil, Deputy Rabbitte said more needs to be done to safeguard teenagers against the dangers of alcohol.
In response, Minister Fitzgerald said education remains vitally important in the fight against underage drinking.
