Headford is the most expensive location in County Galway for private rented accommodation, according to new Government figures.

At the end of last year, private renters in the town were paying an average of €1,064 per month – that’s up eleven per cent from the average of €957 recorded one year previous.

The latest statistics from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) and Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) show that the average rent in the county stood at €905, up 8% from €837 a year earlier.

That means that people are paying – on average – around €816 more per year to their landlords than they were a year earlier.

The RTB Rent Index is the most accurate rent report of its kind on the private accommodation sector in Ireland because it reflects the actual rents being paid, according to the RTB’s records, as distinct from the asking or advertised rent, which is the basis of other rent reports such as Daft.ie.

An analysis of the figures by the Connacht Tribune shows that Barna was the next most expensive location in which to rent, at an average of €982 per month, up around two per cent from the €963 one year previously.

For Galway City, the average rent at the end of 2016 stood at €1,018 – up around ten per cent from the €928 a year earlier.

The next most expensive location in the county in which to rent were Oranmore at €855 (up around 7% from €801 the previous year).

The cheapest county location in which to rent was Portumna at €510 – up thirteen per cent from €450 a year earlier – this was also the largest year-on-year increase recorded in the county.

Rents in Clifden stood at an average of €536, down four per cent from €559 a year earlier. The biggest rent drop was recorded in Monivea, down seven per cent from a monthly average of €883 to €821.
