The Board of Leisureland in Salthill are seeking ‘more options’ on the use of the greenfield area of the site from the consultants charged with addressing under-usage issues at the complex, the Galway City Tribune has learned.

Earlier this year, the UK based SLC (Sport Leisure Culture) consultancy firm, delivered an interim report to the Leisureland Board, now known as Galway Salthill Fáilte Company Ltd.

However, the Leisureland Board have asked the consultants to ‘take another look’ at how the greenfield site attached to the complex could be used more productively through the year.

Apart from the summer holidays – when the site is tendered out to amusement operators – and the Christmas period – when the ice rink is located there, the site is largely idle for the remaining eight to nine months of the year.

Now SLC are to present a ‘revised options’ report on the greenfield site area to Galway Salthill Fáilte by the end of next month, that will try and tease out further options for the greenfield area of the site.

The Leisureland Board are understood to be seeking a three-point strategy for the future of the greenfield site based on more all-year round usage, a better income stream to put Leisureland on a more solid financial footing, and a utilisation in keeping with the leisure/recreational theme of the complex.

At one point over recent years, the Leisureland complex incurred a loss of €680,000 but in 2016 that figure was reduced to €300,000 – the books have been balanced by subventions from the City Council.

Chairman of the Leisureland Board, Cllr. Donal Lyons, told the Galway City Tribune, that they now awaited the new report from the consultants next month.
