Homeless service workers assisted 17 people sleeping rough in the city centre area in the early hours of one morning last week.
COPE Galway says a further six people were provided with sleeping bags the previous night due to a lack of space at the Fairgreen and Osterley Lodge hostels.
On the same date, 30 city families were recorded as staying in emergency accommodation.
The group is calling for urgent action to address what it describes as an acute shortage of rental housing in Galway.
It comes as a report compiled by property website, Daft.ie, has found that rents in the city have increased by almost 11 percent in the past year.
COPE Galway says as well as dealing with active cases of homelessness, the group is in contact with 18 families who have received notice to quit and fear for their future.
Martin O’Connor of COPE Galway said the situation is now reaching crisis point.
