Fingers will be firmly crossed all the way from Tuam to Kiev tonight as Ireland’s Eurosong representative carries the hopes of his county and country all the way to the Ukrainian capital.

Tuam’s Brendan Murray will be ninth to perform in the semi-finals this (Thursday) evening – and if he makes the final, he’ll be back on the global stage this Saturday.

“He flew out last week with a crowd from RTE and he is really looking forward to representing his country. All he wants to do is enjoy himself and if he wins it will be an absolute bonus,” his father Frank Murray told the Connacht Tribune.

Brendan (20) was joined on the flight by his brother Barry and sister Sinead who are all looking forward to the Eurovision experience. His parents decided that it wasn’t really their thing and would prefer to watch it from a distance.

Frank and Julieanne Murray will be watching their son performing on stage in Kiev from the comfort of their own home in Tuam. “I was tempted to fly out but I thought it would bring bad luck on the lad,” Frank added.

Brendan will also be joined in Kiev by his uncle Brendan Fitzgerald from Ballyheigue in Kerry, where Brendan’s mother comes from.

Brendan Murray was a member of the boy band Hometown who played in front of a huge Tuam audience at the Sugar Beat concert two years ago. His parents and family are looking forward to the Eurovision as they believe that he can do quite well with the song.

He will be performing the song ‘Dying to Try’ – immediately after Denmark’s Anja and before San Marino’s Valentina Monetta and Jimmie Wilson.

Brendan told his family before departure that he was simply looking forward to the experience – and that fully understands the vagaries of the Eurovision.

“Look, anything can happen. That is what the Eurovision is all about. We will be watching it from home although I will probably go for a walk while it is on. I don’t have the nerves for it,” Frank Murray added.
