Council hits out at motorists for parking on picnic greens

An issue that roused the ire of Salthill sun-seekers last summer has once again began to rear its head with the latest spell of good weather.

With the mercury rising, all roads have led to the Prom over the past fortnight, but those driving to the hugely popular summer destination have been asked to be more considerate about where they leave their cars.

Last weekend, more than 20 cars were abandoned on the green area on the Prom – forcing those hoping to have picnics on the grass to take their baskets elsewhere.

City councillor Donal Lyons said those that chose to park on the patch of grass were “selfish” and called on motorists to use designated car parks instead.

“This is a problem that only came to the fore last year and it has resurfaced again now – Sunday was a typical example with the fantastic weather we have been having.

“These are green areas for people to relax on and this is a pure selfish act – they got away with it last year and so now they are doing it again,” said Cllr Lyons.

A spokesperson for the City Council said that motorists should be more cognisant of the fact that it is a recreational area.

“It is hard to understand where people get this sense of entitlement and privilege that people believe they can park on the grass,” he said.
