Aran is set to harvest an economic bonanza on the double from its waters this summer – without a salmon in sight!
Instead two separate events will bring some of the world’s top divers and a host of classy yachts and cruisers flocking to the islands for two showpieces that will reap rewards, both as they happen – and into the future.
The Red Bull Cliff Diving series, which takes place this Saturday, is sold out, with a crowd of between 1,500 and 2,000 expected to attend.
And that will be followed next month by a feast of sailing as the West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association brings over 500 crew alone to Aran for its four-day festival.
First up is the Red Bull Cliff Diving series, and both event organisers and athletes are very excited – both by the location and the challenge it poses.
Sports director for the event and former US Olympic diving legend Greg Louganis spoke of the unique challenge Aran posed.
“In a sport where timing can be everything, Inis Mór provides a challenge that it is a natural blow hole, where the waves can surge and ebb as much as a meter, so entries are almost like a moving target for accuracy,” he said.
“This can pose a challenge, the men have been at this venue, so may be better prepared, as for the women this will be there debut at this particular venue, but I believe they will be ready to put on a fabulous show,” he added.
As the dust settles on the diving, WIORA 2017 comes to Aran – a four-day racing festival from July 5 to 8.
Over 60 boats will be competing in the event – another 30 cruisers are expected to attend as spectators – that will bring over 500 crew members to the Islands.
“For the first time ever, Cumann Huicéirí na Gaillimhe and WIORA have joined forced to organise an event to include both Galway Hookers and modern yachts racing side by side, on Saturday, July 8. There will be serious bragging rights up for grabs,” said WIORA treasurer Cormac Mac Donncha.
