Two juvenile boys have been questioned and cautioned by Gardai in relation to one of two criminal damage incidents at the Galway Maryam Mosque last month on the Old Monivea Road.
The two – both aged under 16 – were arrested by Gardai close to the mosque on the Sunday evening of June 25 last, after a number of small stones were thrown at the building.
The arrests follow a similar incident of vandalism on the Monday evening of June 5 last, when one window was broken at the mosque after four stones had been thrown at the building.
While no arrests were made after this first incident – that led to criminal damage of €200 being caused to the window – the line of inquiry is being pursued that it may also have been ‘the work’ of young vandals.
Gardai confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that two juveniles had been arrested in relation to the incident of June 25 last and had been questioned and cautioned under the Juvenile Liaison Scheme.
“Two juveniles were arrested after the most recent incident close to the scene before being questioned and cautioned. Both juveniles were released back into the custody of their parents,” said a Garda spokesman.
CCTV footage viewed by Gardai in relation to the first incident on June 5 also has indicated that the likely perpetrators of the stone throwing that night were also young teenagers.
