Sheeran sells out Galway – but there won’t be more shows

Any hopes of snapping up a ticket for a third Ed Sheeran concert in Galway were dashed this week when the GAA definitively ruled out another show for Pearse Stadium.

Of course, that will do nothing to dampen the excitement of those who were part of Ed Sheeran mania on Saturday morning when all 70,000 tickets sold out in under three hours for the two gigs next May.

The Galway shows were the first to sell out on the Irish tour, which broke all records for ticket sales in Ireland when 300,000 tickets were sold online or at Ticketmaster outlets for the seven concerts nationwide.

The queue outside the Ticketmaster outlet at Gerry Stronge Photography began at 6.30am on Friday morning – over 24 hours before tickets could even be purchased. It wound its way as far as the Slí na hAbhainn estate on the far side of Ballinasloe Town.

“It was magic – much bigger than Garth Brooks,” enthused Gerry.

“There was a big Ed Sheeran singalong at 2am on Saturday morning. It was mainly young people and they were a credit. We put out rubbish bags and they filled ten bags of rubbish for the Council to collect so the place was left spotless. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with.”

The queue outside OMG @ Zhivago on Shop Street was even longer with fans braving the elements to be the first in line at 10pm on Thursday night.

“I don’t want to hear the name Ed Sheeran until next May,” joked owner Joe Carroll.

“We were nearly afraid to go out and count them. One thing I can confirm is that everyone in the queue got tickets – they may not have the got the ones they were after but they didn’t leave empty handed. The fact that there were so many standing tickets was of real benefit.”

The strict anti-ticket lout measures slowed down sales as every ticket had to have a name and fans had to pay with cards that would be produced at the gate come concert day.
