A Good Samaritan local farmer came to the rescue of a bus driver whose vehicle got jammed under the notorious Dyke Road bridge this week.
The modest farmer – who doesn’t want to be identified – said that over the past couple of years, this was the third large vehicle that he has ‘rescued’ from the bridge with his Massey Ferguson tractor.
A Mayo bus driver – unfamiliar with the route – gambled on having inches to spare as headed into the city with a group of children on Wednesday, but quickly realised he was stuck.
He had tried to reverse, but with the bus jammed under the bridge there was no way out – the farmer who was driving into town around 11.30am told him to bide his time until he’d return later with his tractor.
The farmer attached a heavy chain to the bus, pulled him back and the shaken driver was then able to turn his vehicle and make his way into the city via the Menlo Park Hotel roundabout.
“I don’t mind helping anyone out and I wouldn’t take anything from the driver, but what I would like to see is more prominent notices and signage to warn drivers about the bridge.
“I know that there are a couple of small signs in place and I know that the onus is on drivers to know the height of their vehicles, but I believe that a prominent sign at the Dyke Road/Coolough Road junction would be a help,” the farmer told the Galway City Tribune.
