Galway City Council has warned that the Rosshill Road will be closed from August 14 until October 8 to facilitate repairs to the railway bridge.
The road, which serves as a rat-run for many drivers heading towards the city from Oranmore and beyond, will be closed for a period of eight weeks – forcing those who use it onto the already congested Dublin Road.
One such driver said that while they were sure the repairs were necessary, the length of time that the closure will be in place could lead to massive delays – especially when the traffic returns to normal after the school holidays end.
“It’s just convenient to have a way of avoiding some small bit of the traffic – by using the Rosshill Road, you’re skipping two sets of traffic lights and getting ahead of a lot of the traffic coming in from the N6 and Limerick.
“With this closure, I suppose you’re talking an extra 10 minutes being added to my journey every morning and evening – and that’s during the summer.
“This will be going on until the middle of October – what’s it going to be like when the kids go back to school,” she exclaimed.
A spokesperson for the company confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that while road users will face some disruption, train services will be running as normal.
“Iarnród Éireann will be carrying out essential bridge maintenance works which include minor steel repairs and rivet replacements.
“There will be no impact on train services coming in and out of Ceannt Station between August 14 and October 8,” she stated.
Local access will be maintained at all times but those who use the route to skip the tailbacks will be re-routed onto the Dublin Road or the Coast Road.
