When it comes to travelling to work or school, Galwegians are wedded to their cars – and that’s official!
Analysis of Census figures confirm two thirds of all workers in County Galway drive by car to their place of employment.
The figures also confirm that more people work from home in Galway, than the combined total of workers who travel to their jobs by foot or bicycle.
And more than half of all students aged five and over, are driven to school in a car, although students were far more likely to take the bus than workers.
The figures for Census 2016 reveal that 50,091 out of the 73,975 workers in Galway, drive to their jobs by car. That represents 67% of all workers. A further 2,750 travelled to work as passengers in a car.
Meanwhile, just 3,495 (4.7%) of all workers in Galway walk to work; only 637 (0.8%) go by bicycle; 1,099 (1.4%) travel to work by bus; and 323 (0.4%) go by train.
Some 5,056 people work mainly at or from home, representing 6.8% of the total workforce in Galway.
A majority of Galway’s students (24,384, which is 57% of the total 42,199) travel to school or college as passengers in cars.
A further 2,245 students drive to school or college.
Meanwhile, some 21% of students (8,958) travel by bus or coach to school and college, and 10.7% (4,529) walk. Just 32 children are home-schooled in Galway, the figures suggest, although there are a further 1,314 who didn’t state how they travelled to school or college.
The figures also show that the vast majority of the 62,729 households in Galway had one or two cars.
Some 26,184 (41%) households had two motor cars, and some 23,839 (38%) had one car. Some 5,788 households had no car at all – representing 9% of the total – while a further 5,529 (8.8%) households had three or more cars.
The figures are contained in a new release by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) from Census 2016, which allows analysis of different demographics, including individual counties.
