Nearly 240 houses and apartments were completed in Galway in the first three months of this year, and work began on a further 185, according to figures from the national builders’ representative group.

But while the Construction Industry Federation show that residential building work is on the rise here, it is still a long way off meeting requirements identified by the Government’s Housing Agency.

The latest figures from the agency show that for Galway City and its suburbs alone, there is a shortfall of 2,316 housing units.

Figures from the CIF show that in Galway for the first three months of this year, a total of 237 new homes were completed – up around 56% from the 152 during the same period in 2016.

A breakdown of the completion figures shows that in the county, 130 individual houses were built, 52 houses were part of developments, and there were also 20 apartments. In the city, five individual houses were completed, along with fifteen houses in developments and fifteen apartments.

Nationally, there were 3,896 new homes completed, up 24% from 3,144 for the first quarter last year.

For the twelve months to the end of March 2017, there were 902 homes completed in Galway – up 29% from 700 for the twelve-month period to the end of March 2016.

Meanwhile, construction work began on 185 new houses and apartments in the city and county in the first three months of this year.
