Tenants in private rented accommodation are paying more in Headford than anywhere else in County Galway, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.
In the second quarter of this year, renters in the town were paying an average of €1,197 per month – that’s up more than 18.5% in just twelve months.
The latest statistics from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) and Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) show that the average rent in the county stands at €928, up around 7% from €865 twelve months earlier.
That means that people in the county are now paying, on average, around €756 more per year to their landlords than they were a year earlier.
In Headford, where rents averaged €1,010 in the second quarter of last year, renters are now paying an average of €2,244.
The cheapest location in which to rent was Portumna at an average of €451 per month – up 2% from €441 a year previously.
The RTB Rent Index is the most accurate rent report of its kind on the private accommodation sector in Ireland because it reflects the actual rents being paid, according to the RTB’s records, as distinct from the asking or advertised rent, which is the basis of other rent reports such as Daft.ie.
The analysis of the figures by the Connacht Tribune shows that the second most expensive location in which to rent in the county was Barna at an average of €1,019 (up 7% from €952 a year earlier), followed by Oranmore at €868 (up around 7% from €811).
Monivea recorded the only drop, down 7% from €882 to €817 per month in the space of one year.
Meanwhile, for Galway City, the average rent in the second quarter of this year stood at €1,030, up 7% from €956 a year ago.
The most expensive location in which to rent in the city was Newcastle at an average of €1,181 – that’s up more than 4% a year earlier.
