Council sitting on ‘cash cow’ sites in Galway City

The development of two prime Galway city centre sites could provide a funding stream that would benefit the whole county – and could potentially eliminate any cuts that would have to be made to roads funding or the provision of other essential services.

It has been suggested that the extensive car park at the rear of the County Council building at Bóthar na mBan could be developed into a multi-storey structure and could easily accommodate a car park, department store and even a rooftop restaurant.

It could have the potential to provide the city centre with an additional 400 new car parking spaces.

And property, also owned by Galway County Council, at Sandy Road – alongside a parcel owned by the City Council – could also be developed to such an extent that it would generate significant income for the local authority. It could result in a multi-million euro windfall for the Council.

It has now been agreed that a committee, made up of five councillors and four officials from Galway County Council, commission a feasibility study into the two sites and establish their potential.

The suggestion has come from Claregalway’s Cllr Malachy Noone who said that the Council was continually begging for extra revenue to operate its services on an annual basis when it could be generating its own.
