The granting of planning permission for an extension to a medical manufacturing facility in Gort has resulted in the announcement of an additional 75 new jobs for the town.

The company behind the new development has been a solid employer in the South Galway town for more than twelve years and will now increase its workforce to around 200 – it is now one of the biggest in the area.

Earlier this week Galway County Council granted planning permission to Natus Medical Incorporated for an extension to its premises at the Gort IDA Business Park.

Company Director Sean Langan said that initially it would create 25 new jobs but the firm did have the potential to create additional jobs in the future.

Mr Langan told The Connacht Tribune that work on the new distributiion centre would commence in the New Year and be completed by the end of 2018.

Local councillor Gerry Finnerty said that it has been a major injection for the whole area and added that the new jobs would be in the high technology end of the American-based company.

Natus Medical Incorporated is a leading provider of healthcare products used for the screening, detection, treatment, monitoring and tracking of common medical ailments.

These include ailments such as hearing impairment, neurological dysfunction, epilepsy, sleep disorders, newborn jaundice and newborn metabolic testing.

Natus say that they are dedicated to improving outcomes and patient care in target markets through innovative screening, diagnostic and treatment solutions. At the moment they provide around 125 jobs in the town.

Galway East TD Sean Canney has also welcomed the decision of county planners to grant the extension to the manufacturing company.

It is one of the biggest in Gort with Lisk, which manufactures hydraulic products for the aerospace, motoring and off shore gas and oil industries, being the other major employer in the town.
