Property developers vie for Galwegians site

National and international property developers have shown an interest in the 10-acre Galwegians RFC site on the Dublin Road.

The land at Crowley Park, which is zoned for residential use, was put on the market in October with a guide price of €6 million.

It will be sold in a ‘best bids’ tender process on January 31.

Already, the 9.76 acres – which could accommodate 150 houses or an even higher-density apartment or student accommodation development – is attracting huge interest among developers.

Selling agent James Heaslip of DNG Maxwell, Heaslip and Leonard, who are joint agents with O’Donnellan & Joyce, told the Galway City Tribune that there was interest in the land locally and nationally, and representatives of UK investment funds have also been in contact.

“People are doing their due diligence at the moment, and the closing date for tenders is January 31,” said Mr Heaslip.

He said the best price will be accepted, although he added that a bidder may also have other land to offer as part of the deal.

Glenina has been the home of Galwegians since 1963 – the lands were previously part of a €28 million deal struck in 2007, the height of the property boom.

However, that deal fell through after the club failed to secure planning permission on alternative grounds at Brownsgrove, near Bushy Park – there were strong objections from the National Roads Authority on road safety grounds.

The club had reached an agreement with Rhatigan Construction to develop the 30-acre site at Brownsgrove – overlooking Lough Corrib on the Moycullen Road – with seven state-of-the-art floodlit and astro-turf pitches and a clubhouse.

In 2006, a separate deal to move the club to a 30-acre site at Ballintemple on the Monivea Road near Galway Airport was being seriously considered, but did not materialise because club members did not secure a two-thirds majority in a vote.

The club currently has an option to purchase land adjacent to Salthill Devon’s grounds at Drom.
