GARDAI have advised shops and business across towns and villages in the west to double-check their security precautions after an attempted early morning raid by four masked men in Mountbellew this week.

It also follows an earlier but unrelated raid on a bookmakers in Moycullen where a lone armed raider made off with hundreds of euro.

The Mountbellew raid occured during the early hours of Tuesday morning last, when a black car – possibly a Mazda – drove to the front of a supermarket in the north-east Galway town and then attempted to gain entry by the side door.

The four men – who were described as tall and wearing balaclavas – however failed in their efforts to break through the side door of the supermarket, and drove off shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile Gardaí have also appealed to the public in their efforts to locate a lone armed raider who stole several hundred euro from a bookmaker’s shop in Moycullen last weekend.

The raider – who is understood to have entered Mulholland’s shop via the backdoor of the premises – brandished what looked like a small handgun before demanding money from the counter staff.

Shortly before 7.45pm on Saturday evening last, the raider – whose face was partially covered – entered the shop that was open for business as normal.

After getting a quantity of cash, he left the premises immediately and may have exited on foot – Gardaí are hoping that members of the public may have noticed the man either coming or going around the time of the raid.
