A syndicate of 18 office workers in Portiuncla Hospital has scooped a win of €500,000 in the EuroMillions – after a snap decision during their lunch break.
The women who work in various departments in the hospital bought the winning Quick Pick ticket on Tuesday at the Ballinasloe hospital’s Oasis Shop, which caters for patients, visitors and workers.
The win means each member of the syndicate wins nearly €28,000 each – quite a return on the €1 contribution from each lucky member.
They were on their lunch break when they heard that the EuroMillions jackpot was €115 million. They each put in €1 and went to the shop asking for it go on the draw.
The workers quickly realised their good fortune after it was announced on Wednesday morning that the winning ticket was sold in the hospital shop.
It is the fifth win in Ireland so far this year with the EuroMillions Plus – the first in Galway.
Trish O’Donoghue, manager of the Arramark-owned Oasis Store, said the entire hospital was buzzing with excitement.
“It’s an amazing feeling that we can bring so much joy to the winners with this win,” she said.
The winning EuroMillions Plus numbers are: 13, 15, 22, 25 and 41.
