While many a Galway girl will hoping for a diamond ring this Valentine’s Day, one with a mystery provenance has turned up at a city charity shop – just in time for the most romantic day of the year.

Staff at the Cope Galway charity shop on St Augustine Street were examining jewellery left in over a number of weeks when they spotted something with a rather illustrious sparkle.

They sent the piece to be valued by a jeweller, who estimated the engagement ring cost in the region of €1,500.

The ring is a diamond cluster with split shoulders of pavé diamonds, set on 18 carat white gold in a style considered to be very contemporary. It’s a size L that can be adjusted to a size M.

It will go on sale in the shop this week for a price tag of €700.

“This really is something special,” remarked shop manager Allison Currah.

“We really don’t know where it came from. It’s a mystery. Things are donated all the time but it might be weeks later after we go through them that we see what’s actually in it. They might not even know it was that valuable. They certainly didn’t say at the time, look what we have for you – a real diamond ring.”

The engagement ring will be put on sale this week in the hope that some suitor will be enticed to pop the question on February 14, which falls this Sunday.

“It’s a beautiful ring, one that would help make someone a very happy lady this Valentine’s Day,” sighed Allison.

“We are very grateful to this donor and all who donate items to our charity shop.”

The shop is open 10am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday. All proceeds go to Cope Galway, which provides support services for homeless people, victims of domestic violence and senior citizens.
