Galway County Council says around 800 roads across the county are in poor condition and in need of repair.
There are around 1,320 kilometers of local tertiary roads across the county – one third of which are classed as being in poor condition.
The matter has been discussed at Ballinasloe district level, where Councillor Michael Connolly suggested allocating some council funding to the Local Improvement Scheme.
The scheme allows residents to undertake improvement works at their own private access routes with financial backing from the council.
However, the council executive advised councillors that its road budget should first be used to improve the condition of public roads.
