Galway roads budget slashed in half

County Galway is getting €16m in funding for its motorway and national roads network – the lowest allocation for ten years and half what it got last year.

The grant of €16.3m for improvements works from the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) – formerly the National Roads Authority (NRA) – is a far cry from its 2010 allocation when nearly €177m was invested by the State across the 438km network – the highest amount in the last decade.

Galway County Council received €18.6m to maintain the regional and local roads, which was €1.2m or 6% down on last year. In 2007 the local authority received €31m to protect the 6,332km of public roads.

Galway County Council’s senior executive engineer John Leahy said the TII would make the point that the lower levels of funding for 2016 was more than made up by the investment into the Gort to Tuam motorway.

Last July a second allocation was provided of €1.6m. Mr Leahy said the council did not anticipate getting as much as last year but it was hopeful of getting further money later in the year.
