The County Council has reversed its decision to fill in the temporary flood relief channel at Cahermore.
The local authority had intended to close the channel at Cahermore today, and it’s understood heavy vehicles were on-site this morning.
The channel was constructed as an emergency measure following unprecedented flooding across South Galway in recent months.
Councillor Joe Byrne says the decision to fill it in has been reversed following discussions with senior engineers from the local authority.
It follows the recent revelation that an application has been lodged for funds under the Minor Works Flood Relief Scheme to put a permanent channel in place.
Councillor Byrne says the local authority will now examine other temporary options until the permanent solution is finalised.
