A 24-year-old woman has been sentenced to five months in prison for her part in a violent, unprovoked assault on a man in a city park.
Judge Mary Fahy said Sadie Keary, of Fana Glas, Ballybane, had “absolutely no regard for any member of the public”.
“If she doesn’t like the look of them, that’s it, ‘bang’,” the judge said before imposing the sentence at Galway District Court.
Keary pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a man at Fr Burke Park, Fr Griffin Road on February 19 last year.
A second assault charge was withdrawn by Inspector Brendan Carroll following the plea to the first assault charge.
In a separate matter, Keary pleaded guilty last year to a number of scams involving the Done Deal website, whereby she conned three different women into lodging money into her bank account with the promise of concert tickets which never existed and the matter had been adjourned for the payment of compensation.
The total amount taken came to €1,050 and while Keary brought €200 compensation to court in January, she paid the balance of €850 into court last week.
Inspector Carroll said that in relation to the assault charge, two people were walking through the park at around 9pm when they were accosted by a group of youths, including Keary.
The injured party received a number of punches to the face which caused him to bleed. He fell to the ground, where he was kicked and punched some more.
Keary, the inspector said, was one of the people involved in the attack.
“The level of violence is of great concern and she doesn’t look to be too sorry from looking at her,” Judge Fahy observed.
Defence solicitor, Olivia Traynor said the court was familiar with her client.
She said Keary was currently before the Circuit Court for another serious assault and the issue, she said, was her client’s ongoing addiction to drugs and alcohol.
She said Keary had already attended a treatment course at Bushypark Treatment Centre in Ennis.
Judge Fahy asked to be reminded of Keary’s previous convictions.
Insp Carroll said she had received a six-month sentence in December 2013 for a similar type of assault and a further two months for a lesser assault charge.
“That is what I suspected. She has absolutely no regard for any member of the public she comes up against.
“Is she doesn’t like the look of them, that’s it, ‘bang’.
“She has been spoken to on numerous occasions and been given sentences in the past and hasn’t learnt any lesson,” Judge Fahy said, before imposing a five-month sentence for the assault.
The judge imposed a consecutive three-month sentence for Keary’s involvement in the Done Deal scam but she suspended that sentence for two years on condition Keary be of good behaviour and not reoffend during that time.
Leave to appeal the sentences was granted on Keary’s own surety of €400 with half to be lodged and one independent surety of €800 with half to be lodged.
Keary lodged an appeal against the severity of the sentences straight away and walked free from court a short time later when €600 cash was lodged in court.
