Bid to restrict deliveries in pedestrian zone

Business groups have called for a ban on all delivery vehicles in the city’s pedestrianised zone from 9am each day during the summer months.

At the moment, deliveries can be made within the zone up until 10.30am each day.

However, representative groups including Galway Chamber, Galway City Business Association and the Latin Quarter have called for an earlier ban during June, July and August.

Cllr Niall McNelis said: “Visitors to the city doing walking tours in the morning and also day-trippers who have only a short period to shop in the city before they move on, are unable to experience the full delights of the City Centre in the mornings due to the large amount of traffic on streets.

“As schools are also closed during this period access around the city is a lot easier, so the proposal is workable,” said Cllr McNelis.

He added that he has received numerous complaints in recent weeks about roadworks being carried out in the pedestrianised zones.

“The replacement of cobblestones, and fixing of paths should be done in the evenings when there are not high numbers of pedestrians on streets.

“While I acknowledge the need for emergency works to be carried out and the equipment needed to be transported to do this, surely vans and big trucks in the city can be done in the evenings,” he said.
