Galway County Council may go back to an Bord Pleanála to try and find a way out of the hold-up in the development plan for the section of the N59 road between Oughterard and Maam Cross.
The stand-off between the County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service over the work plans for this road were discussed between public representatives and Council management this week.
The long hold-up in the Oughterard to Maam Cross road plan was discussed with County Council management by Connemara Councillors chairperson Eileen Mannion and the Fine Gael T.D. Seán Kyne.
County Council CEO, Kevin Kelly and the Director of Roads Services, Liam Gavin were in attendance
It emerged that the County Council is holding back until there is a decision by an Bord Pleanála regarding the Clifden to Maam Cross section of the N59.
After that the Council may go back to an Bord Pleanála and ask that a condition attached to the Oughterard to Maam Cross section be removed; this is the condition which means that the National Parks and Wildlife Service must give the green light to the Council before work can start-up. Environmental issues are involved.
This has held up further progress on the road plan over 2 years with €4m. unspent money being returned to Dublin.
