Gardai are investigating an alleged incident on the M6 motorway at Oranmore yesterday (Saturday) in which a motorist claims that his vehicle was hit by a van which was being driven the wrong direction.
The white van, understood to have a Mayo registration number, hit the vehicle, in which a man and his wife and three children were travelling, narrowly avoiding a number of other cars.
The couple travelling in the car with their children, including a baby, say they as well as others travelling on the motorway at the time, are lucky to be alive.
The alleged incident happened at approximately 3.50 pm and when reported to the Gardai members of the force from Athenry and Oranmore immediately commenced an investigation.
A Garda spokesperson has confirmed that this investigation is continuing but as yet no arrests have been made.
Anyone who was travelling on the M6 motorway at Oranmore at the time of this alleged incident and who may have witnessed it, or has the reg number of the van, should contact the Gardai at Mill Street, Galway on 091 538000 or any Garda Station.
